Canada killing adds to suspicions of Indian crackdown on Sikh separatists | India's Sikh separatist movement in diplomatic storm
Canada has accused India of involvement in the killing of a separatist Sikh leader on its soil -- a charge denied by New Delhi as "absurd".
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was slain near Vancouver in June, was an activist campaigning for the establishment of "Khalistan", an independent Sikh homeland in India.
The Khalistan campaign dates back to India's independence and has been blamed for the assassination of a prime minister and the bombing of a passenger jet.
It has also been a sore point between India and several Western nations home to large Sikh populations, with New Delhi demanding Canada and others take stricter action against separatists.
Here is what we know about the Khalistan movement:
- What is the Khalistan movement? -
Sikhism is a minority religion originating in northern India that traces its roots back to the 15th century and drew influences from both Hinduism and Islam.
Its adherents make up less than two percent of India's 1.4 billion people but Sikhs are nearly 60 percent of the population in the northern state of Punjab, the faith's heartland.
The Indian subcontinent won independence in 1947 as it was suffering through the blood-soaked Partition that divided the former British colony along religious lines.
Muslims fled to the newly formed nation of Pakistan while Hindus and Sikhs fled to India in the ensuing violence, which killed at least one million people.
The historical region of Punjab was split between the two countries and was wracked by some of the worst violence of Partition.
Canada-based Sikh extremists were accused of carrying out the 1985 bombing of an Air India flight, killing 329 people.
Memories of the insurgency still haunt India, which has outlawed the Khalistan movement and listed several associated groups as "terrorist organisations".
Since the insurgency ended, displays of support for the Khalistan movement in Punjab are rare and have been quickly clamped down upon by authorities.
Indian police in April arrested firebrand Sikh leader Amritpal Singh, who had returned to Punjab from abroad the previous year and begun preaching for a separate Sikh homeland.
Singh was caught after leading authorities on a weekslong manhunt that saw mobile internet cut off for days in the state, home to 30 million people.
- Who supports the movement? -
The Khalistan movement's main vocal advocates are these days primarily among the large Sikh diaspora, particularly in Canada, Britain and Australia.
Fringe Sikh groups periodically hold referendums to endorse the establishment of a Sikh homeland in India.
India has often complained to foreign governments about the activities of Sikh hardliners who, it says, are trying to revive the insurgency.
Earlier this year, Indian consulates in Britain and the United States were vandalised by Khalistan supporters.

India's Moon rover finds sulphur and navigates craters on the lunar surface
Pragyaan, India's Moon rover, has confirmed the presence of sulphur and other elements near the lunar south pole.
The rover’s laser-induced spectroscope instrument detected aluminium, iron, calcium, chromium, titanium, manganese, oxygen and silicon on the lunar surface, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said.
The Chandrayan-3 Rover is expected to conduct experiments over 14 days, as it searches for signs of frozen water that could help future astronaut missions, as a potential source of drinking water or to make rocket fuel.
The rover also will study the moon’s atmosphere and seismic activity.
As the rover roams around the mission's landing point, named the Shiv Shakti point, it has covered a quite a distance. Pragyaan travels at a speed of 1cm per second, and now has covered a distance of eight meters.
On Sunday, the rover’s route was reprogrammed when it came close to a four-metre-wide (13-feet) crater.
“It’s now safely heading on a new path,” the ISRO said.

A TOTAL of 574 migrants arrived in the UK by small boat within 24 hours of new immigration laws passing through Parliament.
Hundreds were detected making the perilous journey in a dozen boats on Tuesday — hours after the Illegal Migration Bill got through Parliament.
The arrivals came as the flagship Bibby Stockholm barge docked at Dorset’s Portland Port.
But it can house only 500 people.
Tuesday’s arrivals total was the second highest number on a single day this year and takes the overall total to 13,774.
But that is still lower than the 15,000 arrivals recorded by this time last year.

Illegal migration bill to become law: what you need to know
The UK government has succeeded in passing its illegal migration bill. After a series of late-night votes and months of controversy, the bill is now set to receive royal assent and become the Illegal Migration Act 2023. The following round-up will give you the key details of the bill and the analysis of the academic experts who have written about it for The Conversation.
The illegal migration bill is the central pillar of Rishi Sunak’s plan to stop small boat crossings, one of his five promises as prime minister. On its journey to becoming law, the bill faced opposition from the House of Lords, Conservative backbenchers in the House of Commons, activists and organisations who support refugees in the UK, and the United Nations.
A key facet of the bill – the Rwanda migration partnership – remains in legal limbo. The Court of Appeal ruled that Rwanda would not be able to fairly and accurately assess refugees’ asylum claims if they were sent there from the UK, and that therefore the plan was unlawful. The government will appeal this decision at the Supreme Court.
But regardless of whether the appeal is successful, the act sets the stage for future migration partnerships, where asylum seekers who enter the UK irregularly (such as by small boat) may be sent to another country the government deems “safe”.

This is London's Oldest Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurant since 1979. Their story starts in 1979, when the Hare Krishna Temple in London opened Govinda’s Restaurant; one of London’s first vegetarian restaurants. Back then, vegetarian restaurants were not so common. If there is one thing the Hare Krishna movement is known for (apart from singing and dancing on Oxford Street!), it’s their delicious vegetarian food. 🔔SUBSCRIBE: https://bit.ly/3aZ7Rac -- Don’t miss new videos ! 🎥Ultimate: • Tech Travel - Dro...
