The co-founder and the executive vice-chairman of Fortis Healthcare Limited, Shivinder Mohan Singh, has decided to step down from his role to do seva (service) at the Radha Soami Satsang Beas (RSSB) headquarters near Amritsar.

The 41-year-old, along with brother, Malvinder Singh, founded Fortis Healthcare in the late 1990s. Their total net worth is $1.81 billion (Rs. 11,987 crore) as of now. The brothers were ranked 63rd on the Forbes’ list of richest Indian billionaires this year.

The Fortis Healthcare chain comprises hospitals, diagnostics and day care facilities.
Shivinder, who believes in giving back to the society, said:
“Having spent almost two decades setting up and running Fortis, our mission of saving and enriching lives is an integral part of my being. Over time this has inspired me to do more direct service and give back to society a little of what I have received in abundance.”

He further said that he had requested to do seva and felt fortunate to be accepted. He is expected to move to the dera in Beas following the transition of his responsibilities at Fortis.

Shivinder completed his MBA in health sector management at the Duke University Business School in the USA. He graduated in mathematics from St Stephens College (Delhi University).

From January next year, Shivinder will become the Non-Executive Vice-Chairman. His brother, who is Fortis Executive Chairman, is supportive of his choice. Malvinder said:
“It is not always that one gets to commit oneself in the service of the society and I am delighted that Shivinder is taking this step at this phase of his life.”
